Great White Pelicans - Estero Americano : Great White Pelicans are one of the largest flying birds in the world. Their wingspan can spread over 9 feet, capable of flying 300 miles without stopping. Their feathers are pure white, except their wingtips, which are black. Their numbers are still declining. I found several hundred resting and feeding on the estero. A local told me that it is very unusual to see so many great white pelicans on the estero. The estero lies along the Pacific Flyway, a major north-south migration route covering the entire pacific coast of the Americas. The estero extends 6 miles inland from the middle of Bodega Bay. Incidentally, all of the photos were taken from my kayak (a 16.5 foot Carolina). The return trip during sunset is heaven.
